Song Sung Blue review: When music opens the door to third and fourth chances

A film that those who don’t believe in second chances should watch, because Song Sung Blue reminds us that not only second chances exist, but third and fourth ones too. For building or finding your own family, falling in love, or finally chasing your dreams.

Hugh Jackman’s character, Mike, is a devoted Neil Diamond fan. He is also a talented musician, with a striking charisma and an effortless charm that draws people in. He falls in love with fellow musician Claire, played by Kate Hudson, and together with their friends they form a band. We follow their journey on the road, the blending of their families, and the beauty and misfortunes that life throws their way.

Both Mike and Claire carry complicated pasts shaped by financial hardship, addiction, and separation. Yet somehow, they try to make amends for their mistakes and become better versions of themselves in the present. Along the way, their children, families, and fellow musicians hold their hands, which makes them lucky in a way.

Every character in the film is crafted with great care and warmth. I honestly wished to see all of them on screen for much longer. The film gently reminds us that luck and misfortune are two sides of the same coin, inevitable, intertwined, and constantly following one another. What truly matters is whether we wake up each new day accepting this truth and choosing to try, to build, and to change something.

Because if we don’t live to beautify and brighten life despite all its rough edges, then why are we here at all? What is life for, if not to chase our passions and stand up for the people we love?

Especially when music, something that nourishes, expands, and heals the soul, is our companion, life can only become more radiant and brilliant. And to unlock music’s healing power, you don’t need stadium-sized concerts. If you have managed to fill the customers of a small neighborhood Thai restaurant with joy for an evening, what more could you ask for?

There is no greater purpose in life than bringing multiple hearts together and making them beat with hope, happiness, and excitement for a few seconds, a few minutes, or even a few hours.
